The Accidental Journalist

When I started working at The Polaris last September, it was purely by chance. While my childhood heroes - Peter Parker and Clark Kent - had both been journalists, I’d only ever taken a semester long course in high school and never had any aspirations to work in the field. After years of wanting to be a fiction writer, but never wanting to write, I sort of fell into my job as a reporter at The Polaris. (more…)

NSCC Creative Work Showcased in Licton Springs Review

The 16th edition of Licton Springs Review, the award-winning literary journal of North Seattle Community College, was released on Thursday, May 7th. The annual publication showcases the best poetry, fiction, non-fiction, photography and fine art produced by students, staff, faculty and alumni. This year the journal includes some of the strongest work to date, including pieces that won the top awards at the district-level juried competition. (more…)

It is well known that very often people come to the US and they don’t know English, or they don’t know how to express themselves in English. A student from Mexico, ESL class, Luis Martizez says “its difficult when you’re alone, you don’t speak English and don’t have friends at this country. Security Takes Our Suggestion

In 1997 the Polaris brought to the attention of the student body that the security department was greatly lacking in several areas. Some of those areas were: communication, responsiveness to students needs, and an overall lack of professionalism. After three security managers cycled through the department in 1997, the current security manager started working at North. Jeff Caldwell took the suggestions of the students to heart and endeavored to create a working relationship between Security and The Polaris student news. Each month, Jack emails the latest on-campus crime report to The Polaris. This information can also be accessed at the Security section through the North website.

College Classes On Your iPod?

Not content with merely being at the forefront of the digital music revolution, Apple now wants to extend its dominance into the educational community. If the company has its way, students at campuses all over the country won’t just be listening to music on those ever-present iPods, they’ll be listening to a class lecture, a language lesson, or other teaching material.
