Immigrants Find Educational Opportunities at NSCC
By Gita Khais | June 11, 2007
It is well known that very often people come to the US and they don’t know English, or they don’t know how to express themselves in English. A student from Mexico, ESL class, Luis Martizez says “its difficult when you’re alone, you don’t speak English and don’t have friends at this country. But I remember: I’m here for a better job, a better life.”
Now, let’s see how education is organized for immigrants at NSCC. First of all, it is important to listen to ESL teachers’ explanations. They help some immigrants as much as they can. For example, S. Kita, who teaches ESL, says It is very common for her students to take classes in hopes to moveon to higher education. “we have students ranging from adults who are just trying to improve their grammer, to people who have just arrived in the US, all the way to graduates planning to go on in their studies”
Anissa, coordinator of program for immigrants says, “our program staff organizes activities to explore our campus, Seattle and scenic Washington state. We have students from over 50 countries- this means you have more opportunities. The program office is dedicated to helping students succed in studies and adjust to life in Sseattle. NSCC students grow and learn through new experiences in the USA and have a better chance of getting a good job in this country.”
We have people from everywhere. Some teachers find that students in our college are more eager tolearn. Some students came from Tacoma and Federal Way- they prefer to study at North. Why study at NSCC? A lot of reasons: no TOEFL required –an English assessment is given upon arrival and intensive English courses are provided if needed; small classes- usually fewer than 30 students. Safe, friendly campus- our park like campus is located in a quiet residential area and next to a major bus route; personalized attention- because NSCC is a small institution, teacher and staff have more time to assist with your needs and questions.
In conclusion, it is important to listen students opinions when their study is already done. SunKim, from Korea, says, “NSCC is diverse and fun. There are activities and clubs where I can meet other students.” This student got a certificate in electronics technology. Another student NamDao, from Vietnam, says “Great teachers. I appreciate all their help and special attention.” Jorge Iirahet, from India, says “My life, as a student, was so beautiful: everyone around me has a dream, teachers who are dedicated to you- they wt to be who they are becoming because of their education.”
