“Success Specialist” Offers Disability Services

By Gita Khais | May 20, 2007

Our NSCC Counseling Center is where students with disabilities can find educational support services. The center serves as a resource for those who face challenges around study skills, test-taking, and time management. It also provides help with personal, emotional and social issues, such as coping with stress, assertiveness, and communication. The Counseling Center also assists students with educational planning.

“The mission of Disability Services (DS),” says Aaron Robertson, Student Success Specialist, “is to maintain a campus environment that is accessible to students with disabilities. Further, it is our goal to support a wide range of progressive services and assistance to meet the needs of permanently and temporarily disabled students. Our primary function is to make available the necessary tools and instructional services to enhance the experience of higher learning; leading to success in the students program of study.”

According to Robertson’s explanation, DS provides services to enrolled students who have a documented permanent or temporary physical, mental, learning, or sensory disability that qualifies them for academic adjustments and accommodation.

Students who can benefit from this assistance are encouraged to contact Disability Services as soon as they enter college. Any equipment provided by DS is on loan on a quarterly basis and must be returned by the last day of the quarter. These aids and services include but are not limited to: textbooks on tape, note-taking tools, sign language interpreters or alternative testing arrangements.

NSCC has an extensive list of campus and community resources available for students with disabilities and other interested individuals. DS provides students with referrals both to other campus resources and to outside sources for screening, testing and other needs.
