Why Is It Important to Have A Student Newspaper?
By Gita Khais | June 11, 2007
I joined the Polaris staff not only to improve my English, but also to work with people who can write clearly and specifically.
After my experience on the newspaper staff, I am more comfortable speaking and writing and communicating in general with other students. Part of my job here was to interview other students and faculty and that helped me with not only my speaking skills, but also in organizing my thoughts, learning to approach and question others and then take that information and write it coherently and well. At the same time, my job is a big help to improving my English.
As a reporter, I got a chance to publish some of my poems as well as write information about some of the teachers here at North Seattle Community College. Some of the things I accomplished are:
- Published my poems about teachers and children
- Let others know about my chosen field as a pre-school teacher
- Met people from other cultures
- Improved my knowledge of computers
- Learned news writing and interviewing techniques
- Worked with a diverse group of students to plan and publish the paper
- Improved my public speaking
My future job goals are to work with people who come from other cultures and the experience I gained on the Polaris will help me do that. I would like to continue to be here on The Polaris staff.
Finally, according to my feeling , I wrote a poem:
By working in ‘’Polaris’’every day
A few nice words I’d like to say:
Thanks to all for your communication,
I had a great time improving my writing, speaking, and conversation.

Dear All,
I know Gita Khais for very many years. We used to be neighbors back in Russia when we were kids. I know and remember the whole family. It has been great to find Gita here in the United States, the country we dearly love. It is amazing to read articles and poems written by Gina. I am very proud of her. Very best to you all,
